The UK’s Tyre Recovery Association (TRA) has called on the government to immediately halt the daily export of 1,000 tonnes of used tyres, following a BBC investigation that exposed the environmental impact of British tyre waste in India.

In a letter to Environment Secretary Steve Reed, the TRA supported British policymakers in reviewing the UK’s tyre waste policy amid growing pressure on the government to end the export of whole end-of-life tyres (ELTs).

The industry body warned that the current policy is causing environmental damage abroad and undermining the UK’s domestic recycling industry, which currently has at least 150,000 tonnes of idle shredding capacity.

“The industry cannot survive indefinitely under the current conditions, and its failure would severely undermine the government’s policy objectives of achieving zero waste and a circular economy,” Peter Taylor, Secretary General of the TRA, wrote in the letter.

The association has proposed several immediate steps, including imposing a size reduction qualification on ELT exports similar to Australia’s policy model. This would ensure that tyres are properly shredded before export.

“Responsible tyre operators welcome the spotlight the media have put on an issue we have been campaigning for years. We have always wanted to see policy reform and to work with the government to do what is best for the environment and British businesses. Action is needed now,” Taylor said.

“The announcement of the Environment Agency’s review of waste export monitoring is the first real step forward we have seen. The opportunity for quick and impactful change must not be lost, but alone, that will not be enough. Meaningful action by central government can no longer be delayed,” he added.

The TRA’s intervention follows a BBC and Source Material investigation titled “Millions of UK tyres meant for recycling sent to furnaces in India,” highlighting the environmental consequences of the UK’s tyre waste exports.

Prinx Chengshan has successfully rolled off its first off-the-road giant tyre, model 30.00R51, a milestone celebrated by company leaders and Rongcheng Mayor Liu Jinjun. This achievement marks a crucial step in the construction of the firm's new green and intelligent off-road tyre factory and represents significant progress in enhancing its high-end product portfolio, effectively addressing a gap in the domestic market for premium off-road tyres.

The newly produced tyre, with an outer diameter of nearly three metres and a weight of 1.8 tonnes, is engineered for massive dump trucks operating in open-pit mines, capable of carrying loads over 120 tonnes. Its design features a wide, deep tread pattern for superior traction and a specialised shoulder cooling system that promotes heat dissipation. This innovation enhances safety by reducing risks such as blowouts while also improving operational efficiency and cost-effectiveness in demanding mining environments.

This strategic development responds to steadily rising global demand for high-end off-road tyres, fuelled by growing infrastructure investment and mining industry modernisation.
