New Tyre Recycling Facility To Come Up In Southern Saskatchewan

Switch IeV4 Rolls Off The Production Line

Crumb Rubber Manufacturers (CRM) will be investing in a new state-of-the-art scrap tyre processing facility in Saskatchewan. CRM operates nine plants in North America, including plants in Ontario and Alberta, and produces crumb rubber to be used in rubber modified asphalt, rubber moluded products and as infill in synthetic sports fields. According to Tire Stewardship of Saskatchewan (TSS), the province will return to having two processors in the province – the existing facility in Saskatoon and the new facility will be in Moose Jaw.

A request for proposals in 2021 for a second processor in the southern part of the province resulted in the selection of CRM by TSS. TSS claims that CRM’s product line was of interest, given their established markets for higher valued end-use products, which displace other more carbon intensive alternatives, thereby reducing the overall environmental impact of TSS’ programme.

Furthermore, because of the market demand for their products, CRM is less reliant on incentive fees, ensuring that consumers receive better value for the tyre recycling fees collected. In addition, TSS states that the programme efficiencies with two processors will result in cost savings, which will be utilised to clean up old tyre piles around the province.

TSS is responsible to manage scrap tyres in the province on behalf of consumers who pay a recycling fee, and tyre retailers who collect the fees. As per TSS, it has been the programme operator since 2018, with a mandate to improve from past practices for recycling tyres in the province – which was expensive – with many scrap tyres remaining uncollected or dumped in landfills and abandoned piles. And historically, most scrap tyres collected were processed into low value end-use products, like Tyre-Derived Aggregate.

Sharing his thoughts, Colin Fraser, Chair of the Board of Directors, TSS, said, “TSS is committed to run an efficient programme on behalf of tyre retailers and to encourage practices that lower the industry’s impact on the environment. TSS has measured the environmental impact from the different recycling practices and knows the products CRM produces are both high value and better for the environment.”

Adding to this, Stevyn Arnt, CEO, TSS, said, “We want to move the recycling industry forward in the province with partners who have the same goals as us, and CRM will be a great compliment to our programme.”

Continental Educates Fleets On Rolling Resistance’s Growing Role In Cost And Emissions Savings

Continental Educates Fleets On Rolling Resistance’s Growing Role In Cost And Emissions Savings

Continental has launched an educational initiative highlighting how rolling resistance-optimised tyres can enhance efficiency and sustainability in commercial vehicle fleets. The campaign, anchored by a dedicated website, provides fleets with interactive tools, videos and data-driven insights to demonstrate how strategic tyre selection impacts total operating costs.

While many fleet operators traditionally prioritise mileage-optimised tyres for their longer tread life, Continental emphasises that rolling resistance plays an increasingly critical role – especially with tightening EU emissions standards and the logistics sector’s shift towards greener transport. Tyres influence not just direct costs (around two percent of fleet expenses) but also fuel consumption, toll fees and CO₂ emissions, affecting up to 31 percent of total operating expenses.

The campaign compares Continental’s fifth-generation tyre lines – Conti Eco, Conti Hybrid and Conti EfficientPro – in various applications, showing how low rolling resistance can reduce fuel use by up to 2,105 litres per vehicle annually. For a 150-truck fleet, proper tyre selection can yield over EUR 300,000 in yearly savings. Continental’s calculations, based on VECTO and its proprietary LODC (Lowest Overall Driving Costs) tool, illustrate these benefits for long-haul and regional transport scenarios.

Beyond tyres, Continental integrates digital solutions like ContiConnect and retreading services (ContiLifeCycle) to further optimise fleet efficiency. Customers like Remondis, a German waste management firm, report tangible benefits, including lower fuel consumption, extended tyre life and proactive maintenance through digital monitoring.

With this initiative, Continental aims to help fleets balance economic and environmental goals, proving that rolling resistance-optimised tyres are not just a compliance measure but a strategic tool for cost savings and emissions reduction in modern logistics.
